White Sox' Thome Hits 500th Home Run (9-16-07) : My wife Kerstin's aunt, Kjerstin Lind (from Sweden), was visiting the U.S. She had never been to a professional baseball game. It just so happened that someone at work had given "my" Kerstin five FREE Chicago White Sox tickets -- great seats, just 20 rows back from the playing field, along with a FREE VIP parking pass. Even though the Sox were in last place (not playing quite as well as when they won the World Series in '05!), we thought it would be nice for Aunt Kjerstin to see a game. We invited my brother-in-law Johan and daughter Mia, visiting from Colorado, to accompany us.

I had not been following baseball very closely this year, so I was not even aware that the Sox' Jim Thome was on the verge of hitting his 500th career home run. I don't go to many baseball games, but it almost always seems that whenever I go to one something big happens -- a no-hitter, etc. Kind of strange. Anyway, in keeping with my luck in attending the right games, Thome, the Sox' designated hitter (DH) came through big-time in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Sox had tied the Angels at 7-7; Thome, with one man on base and the count at 3-2, smacked a walk-off homer that sailed easily into the left-center-field stands. I have since done a bit of research, and it turns out that never before has a player's 500th homer also been a walk-off game-winner. AND WE WERE THERE! Another fluke was the featured "bobblehead" figure being given away as we entered the stadium -- it was that of #25, Jim Thome.

Maybe I need to start attending more White Sox games and see if my being a good-luck charm continues!
